In just a few short days the Altoona Curve will hit the one quarter mark of their 140-game season.
To date, it's not been what many expected this season to look like as the Curve sit at 15-16 on the year.
Though even at just one game below .500, Altoona is only one game and a half out of first place.
Top prospect Henry Davis has exceeded expectations, hitting .308 with eight home runs, 17 RBIs and five stolen bases.
One of the best traits Davis is showing at the plate is his vision, having worked 19 walks while striking out only 22 times.
He's also demonstrated versatility, having spent two games against Akron in right field in addition to him catching regularly.
While Davis has had success, fellow top prospect Liover Peguero has struggled at times this season and even last year after returning from a short stint with the Pirates.
His vision, like Davis, is getting better as his walk rate is improving while his strikeout rate is lowering. His batting average on balls in play is also steadily creeping up and is now sitting at .270 while his average sits at .230 on the season.
Joining Peguero in steadily improving of late is first baseman Mason Martin, whose paltry .191 batting average doesn't tell his whole story.
Against the Akron RubberDucks on Sunday, Martin homered twice and walked three times in four games. He's seeing the ball well and driving the ball gap to gap, which are imperative to his success at the plate.
Having those three playing at or near their potential will only add to the potential success for the Curve.
Getting them back to true form will also alleviate the pressure many are feeling at the plate and the struggles the team is having with runners in scoring position.
It was a rough showing against Akron with runners on with Altoona going 7-for-50 during the six-game series. It wasn't for a lack of trying as the Curve hit many balls right at the RubberDucks, which isn't ideal, but still shows a breakout is soon to come.
For now, Altoona will take on Bowie this week, a team it had success with early in the season. The Baysox are 9-22, and this could be a pivotal series in helping the Curve both break out and climb up the standings.
