READING -- The Altoona Curve had a 1-1 weekend against Reading after losing Sunday's game to rain.
The Curve, with a record of 10-9, are in Richmond for a six-game series starting Tuesday after Mother Nature postponed Sunday's contest. It will be made up at a later date.
On Saturday, Andres Alvarez and Henry Davis connected on a pair of home runs in the fifth inning of a game one win, 4-3, for Altoona. However, Mick Abel stopped the Curve bats in a game two 3-1 loss against Reading at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Altoona took the upper hand in the opener, rallying from a 2-1 deficit early to secure a win. Alvarez tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth off Josh Hendrickson. After Matt Fraizer popped out for the second out of the inning, Liover Peguero walked on four pitches, and then scored on a two-run homer from Davis, his sixth homer in his last 12 games.
Winning pitcher Aaron Shortridge and Noe Toribio combined to allow just three runs in seven innings.
Shortridge earned his second win of the season with five innings of two-run ball, then Toribio got his second save of the season. He needed just 18 pitches to get the final six outs of the game.
In game two, Abel, the Philadelphia Phillies No. 2 prospect, tossed six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters without a walk in his first win of the season for Reading.
The one run for Altoona came on a homer from Mason Martin in the second inning off Abel, a solo shot to right field. It was his third home run of the season and eighth run batted in. Alvarez ripped a double in the fifth inning for the only other hit against Abel.
Reading scored twice in the first off Curve starter Matt Eckelman. Ethan Wilson lifted a sacrifice fly to score Carlos De La Cruz. McCarthy Tatum followed with an RBI single. Eckelman allowed two runs on three hits in two innings with three walks and one strikeout.
Braeden Ogle allowed an unearned run in the third inning. Oliver Garcia and Juan Minaya tossed a combined two-plus scoreless frames to close out the loss.
