Opening day serves as the first sign the weather is changing, that sunny days and warm temperatures are ahead.
In the majors, opening day is the day optimism for every team is at its peak. Can this team or that team go the distance? Do they have what it takes to win the World Series?
Sure, those questions aren't answered on the first day of the season, but never is the optimism for every team higher.
In the minors, opening day is a tad different. The Curve begin the 2023 season at 6 p.m. today at PNG Field against New Hampshire.
"Opening day in the minor leagues is a little anti-climactic in comparison to the big leagues," former Curve star Neil Walker said. "It's the fresh start that's exciting and the thought of continuing to develop and hopefully advance to the next level that motivates you."
The beauty and lore of the first day of the season is there, but so too is the chance for new opportunities for players in the minor leagues.
Instead of it being about teams winning the championship, it's about players advancing a level. Inching closer to wearing a big league uniform.
There's a fresh start involved for many. From players looking to hang on to a declining career to others looking to be more than just a highly touted draft pick there's a reason for everyone to look forward to the year to come.
Everybody starts out at the same point with zeros across their stat columns. What happens from there is up to each player.
It carries a different meaning for fans.
Opening day serves as a time to see old friends and make new ones whether it's on the concourse or a player a child is fond of. It speaks to the beauty and passion for the game itself.
There will be promotions and giveaways and food will be aplenty. Good times should and will be had by many who go to games.
But above all, it's time to play ball.
