ERIE -- The Altoona Curve dropped a pair of games over the weekend to split a six-game series against the Erie Seawolves.
Henry Davis and Domingo Leyba each slugged their second home runs of the season in two-hit games for the Curve on Sunday afternoon, but Erie's offense was too much for Altoona to handle in a 7-3 loss at UPMC Park.
Davis's second home run of the week came in the fourth inning off Erie starter Sawyer Gipson-Long, a solo shot to center field to make it a 3-1 game. Davis finished the week with four RBI and four walks to go with five hits against the SeaWolves.
Leyba followed with a solo shot of his own in the sixth inning off reliever Chance Kirby.
Curve starter Aaron Shortridge allowed four runs on six hits in three-plus innings in his second start of the week against Erie. He allowed two runs to cross in the bottom of the second on a Trei Cruz two RBI-single that scored Jake Holton and Gage Workman, who both reached on hits.
Grant Witherspoon launched a three-run home run off Tahnaj Thomas in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach for the Curve.
Altoona built an early 4-0 lead across the first two innings with patience at the plate on Saturday.
The Curve drew three first inning walks against Erie starter Ty Madden, capped off by a bases loaded walk from Connor Scott. The 36-pitch frame turned out to be the only inning that Erie got from their starter as the Curve used four straight hits to begin the second inning off reliever Williander Moreno to take a three-run lead. Domingo Leyba drove in a pair with a single and after Henry Davis reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases, Mason Martin drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run and make it 4-0.
Workman helped Erie rally with a three-run triple later the in the game.
Altoona couldn't bring home a run in the top of the 10th inning. After a fly ball out to right-center advanced the placed runner to third base for the Seawolves in the bottom of the inning, Mario Feliciano singled off of Cameron Junker to bring the winning run home and send the SeaWolves to their second walk-off win of the week against Altoona, 5-4, in 10 innings.
The Curve return home on Tuesday night to begin a six-game series with the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with RHP Kyle Nicolas on the mound for Altoona against RHP Chayce McDermott for Bowie.
