BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Curve were looking forward to finally playing somebody new, and they changed their recent misfortunes with a strong showing Tuesday night.
Altoona downed Binghamton, 6-0, behind an outstanding performance from Luis Ortiz and the 20th home run of the season from Aaron Shackelford. It was the first meeting between the teams this season, and Binghamton has the worst record in the Eastern League at 39-63.
The Curve had lost 12 of 15 and three in a row entering play Tuesday.
Ortiz (4-8), a tough-luck loser despite pitching well his last time out, tossed six shutout innings and allowed only two hits. He struck out eight and walked two.
Two relievers followed, and the Curve held Binghamton to just three hits.
Shackelford belted a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Curve an early lead.
He went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Altoona pulled away with three runs in the seventh inning.
Prized prospect Endy Rodriguez was promoted to the Curve on Tuesday from high-A Greensboro. The catcher/utility man hit .302 with 16 homers and 55 RBIs for Greensboro.
