AKRON, Ohio -- The Curve have made the most so far of the Eastern League season splitting into halves, picking up another win Thursday night in a nailbiter.
Altoona scored two runs in the sixth inning and added a big insurance run in the eighth before holding on for a 3-2 win over Akron at Canal Park. The Curve moved to 6-2 in the second half, and their overall record is now 39-38.
The overall record will have no bearing on the club in the second-half standings, but being one game over .500 does match the Curve's season high. They also had a winning record when they were 9-8 and 22-21.
Matt Fraizer's RBI fielder's choice gave Altoona a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Fraizer then scored on an error in the eighth to make it 3-1. Akron got a run back in its half of the eight but couldn't catch up as Tahnaj Thomas earned his second save.
Enmanuel Mejia (2-4) won in relief.
The two teams will play a doubleheader today beginning at 3:30 to make up Monday's postponement.
With the victory, the 6-2 record has Altoona in first place, ahead of Bowie, which lost to Somerset Thursday night, 5-0.
The Baysox dropped to 6-3 with the setback. Erie beat Harrisburg, 7-6, improving the SeaWolves to 6-2, which ties them for first place with Altoona.
