AKRON, Ohio -- One of the most impressive hitters in the Pirates' minor league system is getting set to join the Curve, who pulled off another late-inning win at Akron on Wednesday night.
Matthew Frazier was promoted from high-A Greensboro to Altoona on Wednesday, and he'll be joining the Curve roster in the coming days.
Frazier had a fantastic showing at Greensboro to earn the promotion. He batted .314 with 20 homers and 50 RBIs, while scoring 64 runs and walking 43 times.
He was among the High-A East leaders in all of those categories. He also was second in the league in slugging percentage (.578) and OPS (.979).
"Man, he earned it," Greensboro manager Kieran Mattison told the team's official website. "You don't replace a hitter like Matt Frazier in your lineup. You just don't. You figure out new ways to do things, but you can't replace everything he gave you with one guy."
Frazier, 23, was a third-round draft choice of the Pirates in 2019.
Curve win late
Altoona and Akron were tied going into the ninth inning, then the Curve scored three runs to grab the victory.
Jack Suwinski doubled home Connor Kaiser with the go-ahead run, then Carter Bins singled in a pair of runs for the three-run cushion.
The Curve beat Akron for the second straight night and improved to 8-5 against the RubberDucks, who have the Northeast League's second-best record at 48-30.
Stats and stuff
Suwinski went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs for the Curve. He's now batting .318 with a .968 OPS.
Mason Martin drove in a pair of runs for Altoona, giving him a team-leading 59 RBIs.
Bins, Kaiser and Josh Bissonette had two hits apiece for the Curve.
Shea Murray (4-0) won in relief for Altoona. Starter Omar Cruz gave up three runs -- two earned -- in six innings.
Reliever Skylar Arias (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Akron.
