Former LSU coach dies

Dale Brown, who coached some of the most successful basketball teams in LSU history, as well as one of the Tigers' most famous players in Shaquille O'Neal, has died. He was 90.

Brown, whose death Friday was announced by LSU, was just over a week away from what would have been his 91st birthday. On Wednesday, Brown was announced as the 2027 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

"We have lost the most loving and most loved man any of us has ever known," Brown's family said in a statement. "Dale Brown always put others first. He always led with the heart. He was always a great humanitarian before anything else. Dale long ago fell in love with Louisiana. And the people of Louisiana loved him right back. We are forever grateful for that."

Brown was named AP Coach of the Year in 1981, was a four-time SEC Coach of the Year and has the most wins of a coach in program history. The panache with which his teams played and the rate at which they won packed LSU's dome-shaped Pete Maravich Assembly Center with crowds so wild that the stadium took on the nickname, "Deaf Dome."

Rams RB dies at 76

LOS ANGELES -- Former Los Angeles Rams running back and executive Lawrence McCutcheon has died at 76.

A family statement said McCutcheon had "a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease."

He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection during his eight years in the Rams' backfield. McCutcheon was the Rams' career rushing leader when he left in 1980. After he finished his playing career with Denver, Seattle and Buffalo, he began another career as an executive for the Rams in the 1990s, eventually spending more than three decades in the front office.

Three players

join LIV exodus

Louis Oosthuizen one day, and then Ian Poulter and Tyrrell Hatton. The players departing from LIV Golf seem to be increasing by the day with a Sunday deadline potentially looming for other players to decide if they are staying for the new version that no longer includes Saudi money.

Former world No. 1 Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia already have separated from LIV Golf, which is emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy with BC Partners Credit and its $300 million pledge.

Bears' Kmet done for year

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears like their group of tight ends, and the position plays a major role in coach Ben Johnson's offense.

That depth is about to be tested.

Chicago will be without Cole Kmet for the rest of the season after he hurt his right knee on a reception with 5:34 left in Thursday night's 30-24 win over New England.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

≥ San Francisco 49ers star receiver Mike Evans will miss Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons because of Achilles tendinitis. Evans tried to play through the injury last week against Washington before leaving the game late in the first half.

≥ The New York Giants ruled out inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and cornerback Greg Newsome for their game at Houston.

Edmunds did not practice all week with what the team listed as a shoulder injury. Citing anonymous sources, The Athletic reported that the injury to Edmunds is season-ending, and ESPN reported he has a torn chest muscle.
