PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season because of blood clots in his lungs, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the health matter.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Eagles revealed he has a blood clot in his calf. He missed the first of at least four games in Philadelphia's loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The Eagles and Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, released more information on his condition Monday. They said Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and a bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning a blood clot has traveled from the legs to the lungs.
His treatment involves blood thinners, and he won't be allowed to participate in any football activities until he is off them.
The Eagles and Lynn said Hurts was expected to make a full recovery. "He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations," their statement said.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was the only member of the organization made available to the media on Monday -- not general manager Howie Roseman or any member of the team's medical staff -- and largely deflected questions about Hurts' health or how the team handled the situation.
"I'm not a medical expert," Sirianni said. "I lean on our guys in all those situations. I'm a football coach. I lean on our medical experts in every situation. I have full trust and full faith in them. It's not just me that has major care for our players. It's them, as well."
Dalton signs
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons have signed veteran quarterback Andy Dalton and released backup Cooper Rush.
The Falcons announced the moves on Monday following Sunday's 31-23 loss to Chicago. Philadelphia released Dalton on Oct. 9 after he threw an interception on his only attempt as Jalen Hurts' backup. The 38-year-old Dalton was acquired by the Eagles from Carolina, where he made seven starts in three seasons, on March 18. Rush was 0-2 as the Falcons' fill-in starter to open the season.
Colts fire GM
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts have fired general manager Chris Ballard.
The moves one day after fans booed the team resoundingly and chanted "Fire Ballard" during Sunday's 26-20 loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans.
Team co-owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said in January that the urgency to field a playoff team this season could not be greater. In making the announcement Monday, she says the decision could not wait until the offseason. She says a "thorough search" for a successor would begin immediately.
Suspended for spitting
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardiner-Johnson for one game without pay for spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders players during a game a day earlier.
Gardiner-Johnson was ejected late in the second quarter for unsportsmanlike conduct following an exchange with a group of Raiders players, including tight end Brock Bowers.
With Buffalo entering its bye week, Gardiner-Johnson's suspension will begin on Oct. 26 and run through Nov. 2, a day after the Bills host the Baltimore Ravens. The player has the right to appeal the suspension.
Rams are wounded
LOS ANGELES -- Rams receiver Davante Adams will be out for six to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury.
Los Angeles coach Sean McVay made the announcement Monday. The Rams also lost veteran defensive tackle Poona Ford for the season due to a ruptured triceps. Adams is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and the NFL's leader in touchdown catches last season.
He apparently got hurt on the Rams' penultimate offensive snap in their 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
