The NFL is urging the Supreme Court to rule on the regulation of prediction markets, arguing in an amicus brief that states are better positioned to oversee sports-related contracts "given the current landscape."

The NFL is supporting New Jersey's request for the Supreme Court to rule on the governing authority for prediction markets, which provide an opportunity to trade -- or wager -- on the result of future events.

According to the NFL's brief, on the first Sunday of this season, more than half the trading volume on prediction markets -- $1.8 billion out of $3.3 billion total -- was connected to the league.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has maintained it has exclusive federal jurisdiction, while states have argued that the array of typically yes-or-no questions is akin to gambling and falls under their purview.

Daniels returning

ASHBURN, Va. -- As Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels prepares for his return to the lineup, Washington could be without a handful of other key players for an NFC East matchup against the New York Giants.

The team's two top receivers, Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, both have hamstring injuries, leaving their status for Sunday in doubt.

But the return of Daniels gives Washington confidence in what its offense can do against division-leading New York Giants coach John Harbaugh says Daniels has a variety of skills that make him difficult to defend.

Payton takes over

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Sean Payton is taking back play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb to spark the Denver Broncos' stagnant offense.

Payton announced the decision after Thursday's practice, calling it tougher than his initial choice to give up play-calling.

The Broncos have struggled with poor starts, scoring just 13 first-half points this season. Quarterback Bo Nix hasn't been performing well, often opting for short throws instead of deep passes or running plays.

Webb and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph are set to address the media today. The Broncos face the winless Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
