Miami gets top spot in AP poll
Trending
Miami is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2002, No. 2 BYU has its highest ranking since its 1984 national championship season and Notre Dame and Georgia stayed in the top five Sunday after both lost close games.
The wildest and wackiest week of the college football season so far saw five of the top seven teams lose -- a first in the AP poll's 90-year history. Miami and BYU were the biggest beneficiaries of the chaos and were joined by Ohio State in a tightly bunched top three.
The Hurricanes took over the top spot from Georgia, which lasted one week at No. 1 after losing to Auburn at home. The Bulldogs were the second No. 1 team in two weeks -- Texas was the other -- to lose to an unranked opponent.
Miami survived end-of-game drama to beat rival Florida State in double overtime and stay unbeaten. The Hurricanes' two-spot jump made them No. 1 for the first time since the 2002 season ended in the national championship game against Ohio State.
Saturday's games
Auburn 27, Georgia 24
ATHENS, Ga. -- Alex McPherson kicked a game-winning 34-yard field goal as time expired and Auburn, led by quarterback Byrum Brown's dominant running game, upset No. 1 Georgia.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton led a long game-tying touchdown drive in the fourth quarter but lost a fumble with 58 seconds remaining and the Bulldogs driving for a potential go-ahead field goal.
Florida 27, Texas 24
AUSTIN, Texas -- Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. threw two touchdowns to Lacota Dippre in his first career start, Jadan Baugh scored a fourth quarter touchdown and the Gators rallied to beat No. 7 Texas and hand the Longhorns their second consecutive loss.
Florida had risen as high as No. 8 after a 4-0 start under first-year coach Jon Sumrall before consecutive blowout losses, but delivered what could be a season-saving victory.
BYU 28, Notre Dame 24
PROVO, Utah -- Bear Bachmeier threw a go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:47 left and then No. 8 BYU stopped No. 2 Notre Dame at the goal line to preserve a riveting victory.
Bachmeier ran for two TDs, caught another and had 224 yards passing to help the Cougars beat the Irish for the first time since 2004. Preston Rex added 66 yards on 10 carries to help BYU start 6-0 for the third consecutive season.
The Fighting Irish's last chance to win the game, an incomplete pass in the end zone from inside the 10-yard line with time running down, shouldn't have been the final play, according to the Big 12.
"Following the Big 12's review of the final play of Saturday's Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew," the Big 12 said in a statement. "The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week's games."
Miami 43, FSU 35, 2OT
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Darian Mensah threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, the last of them a 3-yarder to Malachi Toney in the second overtime and No. 3 Miami held on to beat archrival Florida State.
Toney had 11 catches for 154 yards and two scores, plus threw a 2-point conversion pass to Cooper Barkate after his OT score for Miami.
Ohio State 19, Indiana 15
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Julian Sayin threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith on fourth down early in the fourth quarter, and No. 4 Ohio State survived what appeared to be the go-ahead score when Nick Marsh's left foot was ruled to be out of bounds as the Buckeyes beat No. 5 Indiana.
The victory ended Indiana's winning streak at 22 and home winning streak at 19.
Tennessee 26, Alabama 10
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- DeSean Bishop rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, lifting No. 14 Tennessee over No. 6 Alabama.
The Crimson Tide have lost consecutive regular-season games for the first time since 2007 after also losing to No. 1 Georgia last week.
WVU 45, Cincinnati 42
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Mike Hawkins Jr. threw for a career-high 464 yards and Jack Cassidy kicked a 35-yard field goal as time ran out to lift West Virginia to a wild win over Cincinnati on Saturday.
The teams combined for 1,220 yards of offense. It marked the fourth consecutive game for West Virginia in which the teams surpassed 1,000 yards.
"It was crazy," Hawkins said. "For the offense, we've just got to keep scoring. That's the goal every week. It doesn't matter what's going on in the game."
Saint Vincent 17, SFU 14
LORETTO -- Saint Francis delivered its most competitive performance of the season but came up short in a loss to Saint Vincent before a crowd of more than 1,800 people.
Tyrone's Ashton Walk led the Red Wolves through the air, completing 10 of 19 passes for 148 yards.
