NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Chris Johnson's Ring of Honor ceremony with the Tennessee Titans is on hold because of what the team described as unforeseen circumstances preventing his family from traveling to Nashville in time for Sunday's game.
The Titans had expected to induct the 2009 NFL rushing leader at halftime of their season opener Sunday against the New York Jets. Johnson announced in June that he was diagnosed last year with ALS, a neurodegenerative condition commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease that affects nerve cell communication with muscles throughout the body.
Titans officials announced the change of plans Friday.
"Knowing how much he and his family desire to be in person at Nissan Stadium for his induction into the Titans Ring of Honor, we will postpone the official induction ceremony and look forward to celebrating the moment with them at a future date," the Titans said in a statement on social media.
Titans officials said Sunday's halftime ceremony will remain dedicated to celebrating Johnson's on-field achievements and legacy.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because it hadn't been made public. The person didn't say how long of an extension was signed. Owner Jed York said earlier this offseason that Shanahan was already under contract through 2028 from an extension signed three years ago. The Ringer first reported the deal

Lowry sets course record
DOONBEG, Ireland --Shane Lowry finally had a great day with the putter and made the most of it Friday by setting the course record with an 8-under 62 at Trump International Ireland to build a three-shot lead going into the weekend at the Irish Open.
Lowry went from wanting to get off the course as quickly as possible in the wind-blown opening round to wishing a day like this wouldn't end. He made birdie on half of the holes and was hitting his irons so well that only three of the birdies were outside 10 feet.
