Central Cambria girls cross country captures meet title

NEWVILLE -- The Central Cambria girls cross country team won the PIAA Foundation Meet Class 2A team championship with a field of 27 teams on Saturday.

The Lady Devils topped runner-up North Catholic, 87-116.

Jillian Wise (11th, 19:48.1), Paige Alexander (14th, 19:54.3) and Delaney Snyder (20th, 20:06.1) earned medals individually.

The Central Cambria boys finished fourth out of 37 teams in the 2A race with Reed Takacs (seventh, 16:37) and Miles Doyle (14th, 16:52.7) earning medals.

Central Cambria placed first in both the boys and girls junior varsity races among 2A teams.

In Class 3A, the Altoona boys finished 27th out of 30 teams and got its highest finish from Archie Glover (71st, 17:29.2). State College's Luke Bradbury won the race in 15:11, and Norwin won the team title.

On the girls side, Altoona had two medalists in Ashlyn Noce (sixth, 18:26.5) and Emma Etters (17th, 19:34.9).

Kathryn Froelich of Peters Township won the 3A race in 17:22.9, and State College won the team title, 103-110, over Norwin.

JV wins Silver

BELLWOOD -- Southern Huntingdon defeated Mount Union to win the Gold Bracket of the Bellwood-Antis Invitational in high school girls volleyball on Saturday.

Fourth-seeded Central defeated fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's in the quarterfinals before it fell to top-seeded Southern Huntingdon. Mount Union beat West Branch, which had topped Bellwood-Antis in the quarterfinals, in the semifinal round.

In the Silver Bracket, Juniata Valley claimed the championship with a victory over Philipsburg-Osceola.

The sixth-seeded Lady Hornets topped Bellwood's junior varsity team, and P-O eliminated Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in the Silver semifinals.

Altoona falls in semi

MECHANICSBURG -- The Altoona junior varsity Lady Spikers lost to Allentown Central Catholic, 27-25, in the Silver Bracket semifinals at the Cumberland Valley Junior Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

Altoona topped Day Spring, 25-22, in the quarterfinals after going 2-4 in pool play against Cumberland Valley and Spring Grove.

Maddie Rupp had 14 kills and 20 digs for Altoona, and Morgon Thompson added 10 aces, 25 assists and 10 digs.

Pitt stars returning

PITTSBURGH -- Pitt volleyball seniors Olivia Babcock and Blaire Bayless announced Saturday they will return to the Panthers for a fifth season in 2027, extending one of the most decorated partnerships in program history.

Babcock, a two-time AVCA National Player of the Year, and Bayless will use their final season of eligibility to continue their careers in the Blue and Gold.
