MASON, Ohio -- Venus Williams' losing streak in singles play has reached 13 matches. The seven-time major champion was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Emiliana Arango on Friday in the first round of the Cincinnati Open.
The 46-year-old Williams received a wild-card entry to the WTA 1000 event. She has not won a singles match since July 2025.
Arango, a 25-year-old qualifier from Colombia ranked 95th, needed 1 hour, 5 minutes to defeat Williams. Williams will remain in Cincinnati to play doubles with her sister, Serena, after they received a wild-card entry.
They last played doubles together at the 2022 U.S. Open.
Garnett getting jersey retired
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves will retire Hall of Fame forward Kevin Garnett's No. 21 jersey after their game against the Boston Celtics this season.
The team announced Friday that the ceremony will take place following the Feb. 28 game at Target Center against the Celtics, who retired Garnett's jersey in 2022.
Garnett will become just the second player in the 37-year history of the franchise to have his number retired, following the late Malik Sealy, a close friend and teammate of Garnett's who died in a car crash in 2000.
Garnett won the NBA MVP award for the 2003-04 season while leading the Timberwolves to the Western Conference finals. After playing the first 12 years of his career for Minnesota, he was traded to the Celtics in 2007 and won an NBA title with them in his first year. He returned to Minnesota in 2015 and played his last of 21 seasons in the league there.
Boxer dies 11 years later
The boxing world is in mourning following the death of Puerto Rican fighter Prichard Colon at the age of 33, 11 years after he sustained brain damage in his only loss.
Colon's death has been confirmed in statements by the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Organization. Colon suffered a brain bleed in a light-middleweight fight against Terrel Williams in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Fairfax, Virginia, in October 2015.
Colon underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and the WBC says he sustained "irreversible neurological damage" because of what the governing body described as "severe, illegal blows to the back of the head." He never fought again and was later pictured in a wheelchair.
More NIL deals from Unrivaled
Madison Booker, Hannah Hidalgo and Sarah Strong will have an NIL deal with Unrivaled for the second straight season as the 3-on-3 league continues to sponsor top college players.
The trio, who star at Texas, Notre Dame and UConn respectively will be joined by KK Arnold -- Strong's teammate with the Huskies -- Ohio State's Jaloni Cambridge, South Carolina's Joyce Edwards, Michigan's Olivia Olson and the LSU pair of Jada Williams and Mikaylah Williams.
It's the third year that Unrivaled has had NIL deals with college players.
WNBA rookies Olivia Miles and Flau'Jae Johnson were part of the 2025 Unrivaled college class and have signed on to play with the organization this winter. Just because a player has a deal with the basketball league, it doesn't guarantee they'll join the group in Miami to play.
