PHILADELPHIA -- Washington Nationals All-Star outfielder James Wood is headed to the 10-day injured list after suffering a left oblique strain while batting Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.
An MRI on Tuesday showed a mild strain, Nationals manager Blake Butera said.
"Hopefully, this is a short-term thing for James," Butera said of the IL stint.
The 23-year-old Wood is in his third big league season and made his second All-Star team last month. He is batting .265 with 30 homers and 73 RBIs and had played in all 114 games for Washington before Tuesday.
Wood felt discomfort on the final swing of his at-bat in the seventh inning Monday, when he grounded out. He said running and throwing felt OK, but swinging did not.
Wood said he'll stay in shape while sidelined and work out as much as he can without irritating the muscle.
The Nationals had lost six straight entering Tuesday and were sellers at the trade deadline, parting with infielders Luis Garcia Jr. and Curtis Mead and starting pitcher Foster Griffin.
Witt returns
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals activated All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. from the injured list on Tuesday after he missed two weeks with back tightness.
A three-time All-Star, Witt leads the American League with 30 stolen bases. He is batting .279 with 13 homers and 39 RBIs in 94 games. Witt was in the lineup against the Twins, but manager Matt Quatraro said the Royals might manage his workload in the coming days.
Staying put
BALTIMORE -- Relief pitcher Yennier Cano and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a $7.5 million, two-year contract for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, a deal that includes a $10 million club option for 2029.
Cano agreed in January to a $1.6 million, one-year contract and the new deal calls for salaries of $2.75 million next year and $4.75 million in 2028, which would have been his last season of arbitration eligibility under the current collective bargaining agreement.
A's on the move
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Athletics placed first baseman Nick Kurtz on the 10-day injured list with a strained right thumb and placed left-hander Jeffrey Springs on the 15-day IL with right hip discomfort.
Both moves were retroactive to Aug. 1. The team also reinstated right-hander J.T. Ginn from the injured list and recalled infielder Max Muncy from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Lock him up
On the surface, Colorado Rockies outfielder Mickey Moniak appeared to be available at the trade deadline and was drawing attention. Behind the scenes, though, the Rockies were already negotiating a deal to keep him in town.
Moniak agreed Tuesday to a $16.25 million, two-year contract that covers 2027 and '28. He gets $7.25 million next season, which would have been his final year of arbitration eligibility, and $9 million in 2028, when he would have been eligible for free agency under the current labor contract.
Moniak has 18 homers and 49 RBIs across 75 games this season.
Not tonight
NEW YORK -- St. Louis Cardinals All-Star right fielder Jordan Walker has been scratched from the starting lineup against the New York Yankees because of right knee inflammation.
Walker was slated to bat second before getting scratched about an hour prior to first pitch. Nelson Velazquez replaced Walker in right field, and designated hitter Iván Herrera was moved up to second in the batting order. Walker is hitting .285 with 22 homers and 81 RBIs during a breakout season.
He won the All-Star Home Run Derby last month in Philadelphia by beating Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber in the final round.
