Ex-Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana called up by Diamondbacks

MLB notes

ATLANTA -- Reliever Dennis Santana was called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of their game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

The 30-year-old right-hander is joining his sixth big league team, having appeared with the Dodgers, Rangers, Mets, Yankees and Pirates over his nine-year career. He had 16 saves a year ago for Pittsburgh but was designated for assignment last month with a record of 2-5, two saves and a 6.05 ERA in 44 games.

Santana then joined Arizona's Triple-A team in Reno on a minor-league deal.

Baez has big debut

CHICAGO -- Joshua Baez became the first player to hit three home runs in his first three at-bats in the major leagues, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

The 23-year-old left fielder, called up from Triple-A Memphis earlier in the day, hit the first pitch he saw into the Wrigley Field bleachers, then homered in his next two at-bats. He also drove in five runs.

Arenado worried

ATLANTA -- One day after hitting two homers, Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado is fretting about a pain he's never felt.

Arenado pulled himself out a 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning Sunday with what was described as left trunk discomfort. He only hopes it's not too serious, especially when the Diamondbacks are battling for a playoff spot.

They came into the day vying with San Diego and Philadelphia for the final two NL wild-card spots. Arenado plans to get an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. But he concedes to being "worried."

Bellinger on hold

TORONTO -- New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he misspoke earlier Sunday when he said injured outfielder Cody Bellinger would begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday.

Boone corrected himself following a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays, saying Bellinger will go through another round of workouts before starting his rehab assignment later in the week. There's no setback, Boone said, just a miscommunication.

Bellinger has been sidelined since July 26 because of a strained left hamstring.

Bellinger re-signed with the Yankees last winter for $162.5 million over five years.

Starting at /week.
