Mets put their closer on 15-day injured list

ATLANTA -- The New York Mets placed closer Devin Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain Monday.
Mets interim manager Andy Green said he does not believe it will be a long-term stint on the IL for Williams (3-2, 4.66 ERA), who is in his first season with the Mets. The move is retroactive to Aug. 8.
"He's been dealing with a little bit of shoulder fatigue for a little while now," Green said. "(It was) something he was confident he could work through."
Williams, who was an All-Star with Milwaukee in 2022 and 2023, has 16 saves and three blown saves. He last worked Friday against the Pirates, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning.
RHP Jonathan Pintaro was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Williams' spot.
The Mets, who have won five of six, are opening a three-game series against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.
Done for the year
SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday for an abdominal strain.
Chapman was seen Monday in Philadelphia by Dr. William C. Meyers, who confirmed the core muscle injury, and the five-time Gold Glove infielder will stay there for the procedure. The 33-year-old Chapman, who signed a six-year, $151 million contract in September 2024 that takes him through 2030, batted .235 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs over 84 games this season.
Kilian hurting
ST. LOUIS -- The Philadelphia Phillies placed reliever Caleb Kilian on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain prior to Monday's series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals and recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Kilian, a right-hander, was acquired at the trade deadline from San Francisco along with Luis Arraez. He is 4-7 with a 4.91 ERA with both the Phillies and Giants this season.
He got the win in his last appearance on Saturday in Toronto, but appeared to suffer the injury on his last pitch.
Arizona moves
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks added some reinforcements to their pitching staff on Monday with Michael Soroka returning from the injured list and Zack Littell agreeing to a one-year contract.
To make room for the two pitchers, the D-backs designated veteran right-hander Paul Sewald -- their closer this season -- for assignment and sent Kade Strowd to Triple-A Reno.
Soroka returns after missing nearly two months with left hip discomfort. The 29-year-old was one of team's most effective pitchers before the injury with an 8-3 record and 3.07 ERA. Littell had 7-8 record and 4.97 ERA with the Washington Nationals over 23 appearances, including 14 starts, this season before getting released last week.
Starter needed
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi has been placed on the 15-day injured list because of elbow inflammation.
The move was made before the Rangers opened a road series Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Rookie right-hander Ben Peoples was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
The 36-year-old Eovaldi is the team leader with his 10 wins and 132ª innings pitched. Eovaldi limited Baltimore to one run and four hits over 5• innings Friday night before leaving after 86 pitches.
