LONDON -- Rising star Victoria Mboko says she will miss Wimbledon because of a knee injury sustained during a match this week at Queen's Club.
The ninth-ranked singles player was in the spotlight at Queen's Club as the doubles partner of Serena Williams who returned to professional tennis after nearly four years out of the sport.
The 19-year-old Mboko slipped and appeared to strain her knee during a match against Karolina Pliskova at the HSBC Championships. She retired from the match and later pulled out of the doubles event. Mboko says the fall "caused an injury to the MCL on my left knee" and will mean no Wimbledon this year.
Sacramento thinking big
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento region strives to be more than just a way station for the Athletics before they complete their move from Oakland to Las Vegas.
Local officials have put together what they describe as the "Sacramento Pitch" in hopes of being an expansion city if Major League Baseball makes the decision to add more teams following the resolution of collective bargaining.
Leaders have put together a package that includes a commitment of $1 billion in public funding and nearly $800 million more in private investment to the effort. But they are still seeking a lead investor for the project.
AG wants QB punished
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond publicly called on the Big 12 to suspend Brendan Sorsby after the Texas Tech quarterback won a court order restoring his eligibility.
"If Texas Tech will not do the right thing, the Big 12 should," Drummond wrote Friday in a letter to the conference. "Texas Tech should be sanctioned. I also note that the injunction granted to Sorsby applies only to the NCAA. It does not impede the Big 12 from suspending Sorsby."
The ruling set aside his ban by the NCAA for gambling on pro and college sports. Drummond wrote the conference a letter on Friday. The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had already warned the Big 12 of potential legal action from Texas Tech as the conference considers its options.
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said the notice from Paxton came shortly before a meeting to discuss Sorsby's situation.
Clemson WR still has a shot
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Clemson wide receiver Tristan Smith was granted a temporary injunction by a South Carolina judge on Friday that prevents the NCAA from ruling him ineligible for the 2026 football season.
The NCAA denied Smith's waiver for a fifth year after he played two seasons at a junior college, one year at Southeast Missouri State and last season with the Tigers.
Smith responded with a lawsuit against the NCAA.
Jessica A. Salvini, a circuit court judge in South Carolina, ruled in Smith's favor based on precedent set when Malik Benson and Diego Pavia challenged NCAA eligibility rules for athletes coming from junior colleges.
Smith had 24 receptions for 239 yards with a touchdown in 13 games, including four starts, last season at Clemson. He transferred from Southeast Missouri State after spending two seasons at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.
