Tyrone downs Altoona for Curve Classic crown

Tyrone entered this year’s high school baseball season with high expectations, but after a loss to Bellefonte on Monday, the Golden Eagles stood at just 2-5 and things looked bleak entering the annual Altoona Curve Classic tournament at PNG Field.

But Tyrone got a glimmer of hope with a win over Somerset in a rescheduled game Wednesday and seemed to carry that momentum throughout the Classic.

The Golden Eagles hung tough against previously unbeaten Hollidaysburg and the Golden Tigers’ top pitcher Vince Boland to rally for a walk-off win in the semifinals and then got to Division I Marshall commit Tanner Stroup and Altoona in the championship game and came away with a 6-3 rain-shortened victory Friday night.

“I think they believe now — beating those two teams Hollidaysburg and Altoona,” Tyrone coach Kevin Soellner said. “I think Hollidaysburg is the front runner for states in 5A, and Altoona is a really good 6A program. For us to fight against Stroup today, that meant a lot to me. That’s what I beg for out of my team — to fight like that. I was really proud of them.”

After falling behind 0-2 in the count to start the game, Tyrone’s Brayden Parsons lined a single to right field off Stroup. Colton Frye came in to courtesy run, and Stroup’s pickoff throw got away allowing Frye to get to third where he scored after a wild pitch to put Tyrone up 1-0.

“Against Altoona, their first pitcher was throwing as hard as anyone we have seen all year,” Parsons said. “But I got the leadoff single and that got us going. He threw the ball away on a pickoff, and I think he was rattled from there.”

Altoona got two runners on in the bottom of the inning, but Tyrone starting pitcher Carter Price, who finished off the win against Hollidaysburg, induced a double play grounder to escape the jam.

Stroup walked the first three batters in the top of the third inning, and Wyatt Kustenbauder followed with an RBI single. Conner McClure hit a sacrifice fly, and Owen Oakes — who had the walkoff single against Hollidaysburg — had an RBI hit. Another run came home on an Altoona error, and Tyrone led 6-0.

“Coming into the Curve Classic at 3-5, nobody really thought we would even make it to the championship let alone win it,” Parsons said. “Our coaches say tip of the spear. Once we start going we have to just finish it, and we finished strong.”

Altoona had three straight hits by Brayden Pike, Conner Pike and Nick Kraft in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1, but Jon Stroup made a diving stop on a sharp grounder to limit the damage.

Stroup, along with Parsons — who was named the tournament MVP — hit extremely well throughout Tyrone’s wins in the Curve Classic over Bishop Guilfoyle, Hollidaysburg and Altoona.

“They have been hot,” Soellner said. “Brayden got off to a slow start this season. So did Jon. But they have definitely been squaring it up, and hitting is contagious.”

Brayden Pike added an RBI single in the fourth inning and Connor Waite’s RBI double chased Price in the bottom of the fifth inning and made it 6-3.

“We didn’t pitch well. We didn’t field well,” Altoona coach Tom Smith said. “We didn’t make plays. They did. They turned two double plays. Their pitcher threw well and gutted it out. They made another diving play on a grounder that saved some runs. The only positive was that we were down 6-0, and we battled. We couldn’t get that clutch hit, but we had a ton of guys on. It could have been a different situation if we got that clutch hit. To Tyrone’s credit, they got big outs.”

The final two outs came from Logan Seeger, who after walking Alex Glasgow, got a pair of groundouts to end the fifth inning in a driving rain.

“Carter had thrown 16 pitches in the first game, so we knew he wasn’t going to be able to pitch the whole game,” Soellner said. “Seeger — any time we have mud, he’s the guy we go to. He doesn’t stride out as far. He’s our mudder. He beat Punxsutawney a couple years ago in the mud too.”

Altoona Curve grounds crew members met with the umpires following the completion of the fifth inning and determined the field was no longer safe to play on and that the radar did not look good. Because the game had gone five innings, it was considered official.

“Who knows (what would have happened if they played the last two innings)?” Smith said. “We gave up five runs in one inning. We weren’t good in that inning. They had five at bats, and we had five at bats. That’s how you have to look at it. It was a five-inning game, but we had as many at bats as they did. They deserve it.”
