Steelers will waive TE Smith
PITTSBURGH — Jonnu Smith’s time in Pittsburgh is apparently over.
ESPN reported late Wednesday night that the Steelers will release the veteran tight end when the new league year begins next week. According to ESPN, cutting ties with Smith, 30, will save Pittsburgh $7 million in cap space. The new league year begins on March 11 at 4 p.m.
Smith showed up in Pittsburgh via a trade with the Miami Dolphins, that also included the Steelers getting Jalen Ramsey in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Smith finished with 222 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
Besides Miami and Pittsburgh, Smith also played for the Falcons, Patriots and Titans, who drafted him in the third round in 2017. His best season ever with with the Dolphins when he caught eight touchdown passes and totaled 884 receiving yards. It was his lone Pro Bowl season.

n The Bills have brought in a familiar face for rookie coach Joe Brady and a top target for quarterback Josh Allen, agreeing with the Bears to acquire wide receiver D.J. Moore in a trade. That’s according to two people with knowledge of the trade who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal cannot become official until next week. They say Buffalo is swapping Chicago a second-round pick for a fifth-rounder in this year’s draft to get Moore. Brady coached Moore as offensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2020-21.
