CLEARFIELD — The Williamsburg girls basketball team held serve just like the rest of District 6 did in the PIAA Tournament’s Class 1A bracket.
The Lady Pirates held up their end of the bargain like the rest of District 6 on Wednesday evening, doubling up District 9 runner-up Elk County Catholic, 56-28, in the second round at Clearfield Area High School.
Just like a year ago, District 6 will be guaranteed a team in the state championship next Friday. Williamsburg, the fourth-place team out of District 6, will play runner-up Bishop Carroll in the state quarterfinals on Saturday. District champion Bishop Guilfoyle and third-place finisher Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy will play in the other quarterfinal.
Williamsburg never trailed on Wednesday and outmatched the Lady Crusaders. The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, and it only grew from there.
“I was proud of the girls,” Williamsburg coach Angela Detwiler said. “We wanted to play with a lot of intensity. We played full-court man-to-man. Elk County Catholic is a very disciplined team. I think we disrupted their offense a little bit and got up in their passing lanes.”
Elk County Catholic especially had a tough time matching Williamsburg’s size with forward Levada Gorsuch going for 14 points.
“I thought we played hard,” ECC coach Ken Pistner said. “They just had a little more size than us and a little more experience.
“We’re playing one of the best teams in the state. We know the four District 6 teams that all four of them are good. Any one of them can win the state title this year.”
Gorsuch put in the first three points of the game before Brynn Lower hit her only basket of the game with a 3-pointer to go up 6-0 in the first three minutes.
It wasn’t long until Williamsburg got its lead up to 12 after a Bella Royer basket made it 17-5.
Williamsburg’s defense was especially suffocating in the second quarter as it only allowed one ECC field goal on a Lena Polaski 3-pointer.
The Lady Pirates led 33-11 at halftime, including eight points from Gorsuch and plenty more rebounds and blocked shots.
“She had a solid game,” Detwiler said. “It’s great having her back on the floor. If we have a team playing zone, we can get it into her and she can kick it back out for outside shots. We’re more versatile with her on the floor.”
Williamsburg got the 30-point mercy rule clock going on a three-point play from Royer in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Elk County Catholic finished the season at 16-10.
“If you would have told me before the season started with a group of young players that we’d play for a district title and get to the second round of state playoffs, I’d say that’s a pretty good job,” Pistner said. “I’m proud of the kids. They played extremely hard.”
The state quarterfinal game between Williamsburg and Bishop Carroll will be held at a time and place to be announced today. Bishop Carroll won last year’s state quarterfinal game, 60-47. The game was held at Altoona Area High School.
“They beat us last year, so we definitely want that one,” Gorsuch said.
“I am going one game at a time. I haven’t watched Carroll or anyone yet,” Detwiler said. “I focused on this game. Now that we checked this one off the list, I’ll start to focus on that.”
