Central’s Matthews steps it up in last period

Scott, Williams also advance to semis

Ty Matthews (Central) works against Warren Wolesagle (Elizabeth Forward) in the 107lb Quarter-Final. Matthews won the match by decision 8-3.

Down 3-1 entering the third period of the 107-pound Southwest Class 2A Regional quarterfinal against Elizabeth Forward’s Warren Wolesagle, Central freshman Ty Matthews noticed Henning was running out of gas.

Wolesagle took an injury timeout when the second period ended.

“I just (had to) push the pace,” Matthews said. “He needed to catch his breath.”

“Ty kept at it,” Central coach Dave Marko said, “and we kind of sensed at the end of the second period the kid was starting to slow down.”

Matthews came out aggressively in the third, did a slide-by, which he calls his “bread and butter,” and took Wolesagle down 18 seconds into the period.”

Ayden Soler (Claysburg-Kimmel) escapes Carter Katus (Burgettstown) in the 139lb Quarter-Finals. Solar was defeated in a tough match 4-2 in TB2.

Not too long after that, Matthews put Wolesagle on his back near the edge of the mat. Central fans in the absolutely packed Altoona Fieldhouse erupted and Matthews kept Wolesagle on his back for a long time.

“He could have maybe gotten the pin, but we didn’t need the pin,” Marko said. “So there was no sense in going for it at that point. That’s normally a situation where we have a lot of pins. In that situation, just stay there, and he did a great job.”

Wolesagle finally got off of his back with 20 seconds remaining, but Matthews wasn’t letting him do anything else. When his hand was raised after an 8-3 win, Matthews hugged a very happy Marko.

The win moved Matthews, who was Central’s first District 6 champ since 2004, into the semifinals and qualified him for the PIAA Championships.

“It feels great,” Matthews said. “I’m going to states. It’s an awesome experience. It’s awesome for Central wrestling.”

Kyle Scott (Tyrone) got the fall at 0:47 into the first period of the 189lb Quarter-Final against Trey Dunlap (Quaker Valley).

“There are three Matthews boys are very, very talented,” Marko said, “and Ty just may be the most talented of the group. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be most successful. That book is left to be written, but he is a very, very talented wrestler.”

Matthews will wrestle Derry Area’s second-seeded Mason Keesecker in the semifinals.

Two other wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semifinals in Tyrone’s Kyle Scott (189) and Glendale’s Daniel Williams (285).

Tyrone’s Kyle Scott (41-0) dominated his way to two wins, including an eye-popping 17-2 technical fall in 36 seconds and a 47-second fall over Quakertown’s Trey Dunlap.

“He’s on a mission,” Tyrone coach Quentin Wright said. “That’s for sure.”

How do you slow Scott down?

“Wrestle me,” Wright said. “He’s doing what he does well when it comes to his positioning and how he wrestles.”

Williams earned a couple 4-2 decisions over Washington’s Joe Williams and Southmoreland’s Kaden Shannon.

Scott set a Tyrone record for the fastest technical fall in history against Berlin Brothersvalley’s Seth Kimmel.

“You should have watched (Bishop McCort’s) Bo (Bassett),” Scott said. “His fastest was 30. II was trying to beat it. Stuff flowed right. When it flows right points go on the board. I was a little shocked, but I know how good I can wrestle.”

He didn’t waste much time in the quarterfinals, putting Dunlap on his back and getting the fall.

Scott tied former Tyrone great Ronnie Garbinsky for second on the school’s all-time win list with 158. He needs two wins today to tie A.J. Schopp at 160 for first place.

“It will probably mean something to me later on,” Scott said, “but right now I’m just focused on a goal.”

He wrestles Bethlehem Center’s Malachi Peak in the semifinals as he gets close to his first regional title.

“I’m just going to wrestle my match,” Scott said.

Williams got an escape in the second to break a scoreless tie against Wilson. And then he got a takedown with 17 seconds left in the second. Williams gave up an escape and a stalling point in the third.

Williams was tied, 1-1, with Shannon when the Viking senior nailed a takedown with 1:03 left in the bout. He gave up a point on a technical violation with 11 seconds. But Williams, who missed all of last season with knee injuries, qualified for Hershey.

He’ll face West Greene’s top-seeded Colin Whyte in the semifinals.
