Altoona gets two in semifinals

Three area wrestlers are still in the running for a PIAA Class 3A West Regional title this morning at Canon-McMillan High School.

Altoona 133-pounder Braiden Weaver is still a possibility for his third regional championship, while 160-pounder Gavin Ciampoli is still alive for his first title.

Hollidaysburg 285-pounder Scott Payne, who is in his first trip to regionals, also found himself going 2-0 on the day and needs to win one match today for a trip to the PIAA Championships.

All three will wrestle in this morning’s semifinals, which get under way at 10:30 a.m. Action will start with a consolation round at 9 a.m.

Weaver started off the tournament with a 6-0 win over Mars’ Parker Joseph before going on for an 11-1 major decision over Canon-McMillan’s Jon Emma. Weaver will wrestle Ringgold’s Evan Tolliver for another shot at the regional finals.

Ciampoli started off with a first-period pin before picking up a 7-1 victory over Ringgold’s Cristian Lowther. He will wrestle West Mifflin’s Cooper Dietz in the semis.

“Both of them are really good wrestlers, and they wrestled really well today,” Altoona coach Joel Gilbert said. “They attacked, and scored points when they needed to, and I don’t know that they gave up many points. Both of them look really tough. I’m confident they’ll have a good day tomorrow.”

Hollidaysburg had as good of a preliminary round as coach Christian Harr could have hoped for with all five wrestlers in the tournament going 5-0 to reach the quarterfinals. Payne was the only one to win in the quarters, but the other four in Connor Sidney (107), Landon Krupka (114), Brayden Sidney (121), and Keegan Hewitt (189) are all alive in the consolation brackets.

“We certainly went out there and scrapped,” Hollidaysburg coach Christian Harr said. “That first round was awesome. I can’t tell you if we ever went 5-0 in the first round of a regional tournament. That was huge from a team perspective.”

Payne came from behind in both of his matches to get pins. He trailed 10-3 in the first round to Trinity’s Edrick Williams before getting the fall in 3:28.

He also fell behind 6-1 in the first period in the quarterfinals to Cranberry’s Noah Lucarelli, but re-gained the lead in the third period before getting the pin in 5:19.

“He came back in both of those matches, and that’s kind of how Scotty wrestles,” Harr said. “Scotty can put guys in danger and finish big. That was a huge win for him to make the semifinals.”

Altoona’s Dominic Picciotti (107), Deklan Barr (127), and Phillip Sarbo (152) all went 1-1 and will try to wrestle back for third place today.

“Hopefully you get a little better and that’s all you can do down here,” Gilbert said. “The wrestling is tough and there’s a lot of really good wrestlers in this tournament. Every match is a dogfight.”

The Mountain Lions’ Reese Hite (145) and Khamden Thompkins (285) both went 0-2 to be eliminated from the tournament.

Altoona is in ninth place in the team standings with 29 points, while Hollidaysburg is in 12th place with 25 points.

The host school Canon-McMillan is in the lead for the team standings with 60.5 points, followed by Franklin Regional (50) and State College (45).
