Pitt gives up winning shot in final seconds

Men's basketball

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Pitt erased a six-point halftime deficit, and led for nearly 12 minutes in the second half, but Boston College’s Boden Kapke drilled a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to lift the Eagles to a 65-62 victory Wednesday night at Conte Forum.

The Panthers (8-11, 1-5 ACC) had a chance to tie or take the lead after Kapke’s go-ahead shot, but two late three-point attempts fell short and Boston College (9-10, 2-4 ACC) held on for the win.

Despite the loss, five Panthers scored in double figures, led by Cameron Corhen and Roman Siulepa, who each recorded double-doubles. Corhen finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Siulepa added 13 points and a career-high 11 boards. Brandin Cummings contributed 11 points, and Barry Dunning, Jr. and Nojus Indrusaitis each added 10 points.

Pitt’s first half was marred by shooting struggles as the Panthers shot just 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the field and trailed 28-22 at the break.

The second half was a different story. Pitt opened the final 20 minutes with a 7-0 run, capped by a Corhen layup that gave the Panthers their first lead at 29-28. Corhen then knocked down a three-pointer moments later to extend the advantage to 32-30.

Pitt shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field in the second half and led by as many as six points. Boston College responded and the teams traded leads down the stretch.

The game was tied at 62-62 with under two minutes to play when Corhen missed inside and Boston College secured the rebound. Siulepa came up with a steal on the ensuing possession, and Pitt called timeout with 53.1 seconds remaining to set up a play.

Dunning’s corner three missed, and Siulepa grabbed his eighth offensive rebound of the night but could not convert, setting up Kapke’s decisive shot.

Corhen’s double-double was his fifth of the season, and the senior forward went 6-of-10 from the field while adding a three-pointer. Siulepa’s 11 rebounds included eight on the offensive glass, as Pitt finished with 15 offensive boards and a 17-8 advantage in second-chance points. The Panthers also outscored Boston College 34-28 in the paint.

Kapke led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Eagles. Fred Payne added 18 points, including three three-pointers.

Pitt returns to action Saturday when the Panthers host NC State at noon on ESPN2.
