Goalie has big game for Penn State hockey

UNIVERSITY PARK — Freshman Josh Fleming stopped all 27 shots he faced as No. 9 Penn State earned its first-ever shutout against Minnesota with a 3-0 victory in Big Ten Conference action at Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night.

Penn State (13-6-0) opened the scoring early in the first period as Luke Misa redirected a point shot from Carter Schade inside the near post for the 1-0 edge at the 5:13 mark.

The Nittany Lions doubled the margin when Cade Christenson snapped a one-timer past the blocker of Gopher net-minder Luca Di Pasquo for the 2-0 lead.

It was 3-0 after Matt DiMarsico slipped a rebound into a wide open net.

Fleming was perfect stopping all 27 shots he faced for his second career shutout to improve to 6-3-0 on the year while Di Pasquo drops to 5-5-0 overall after making 37 saves.

The two teams play again Saturday at 6 p.m.

Men’s volleyball

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State men’s volleyball opened the 2026 season with a 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18 win over Mount Olive in a non-conference match Friday night at Rec Hall.

Owen Rose was named the Mike Anderson Man of the Match for Penn State as he hit .636 with eight kills, six blocks, and one ace. The Nittany Lions were strong in the middle as Gaige Gabriel also had eight kills while hitting .389 and added five digs and four blocks.

Sean Harvey tallied a team-high 13 kills for Penn State, while Miller Trubey joined him in double-digits with 10 kills. The 7-0 junior also showed off his skill at the service line with a 71-mph ace.

Matthew Luoma and Carter Dittman contributed four kills apiece, while redshirt freshman Jaidyn Bethel played two sets in his collegiate debut and chipped in with three kills.

Ryan Merk steadied the defensive effort and passing for the Nittany Lions. The redshirt senior libero led the team with nine digs and was a perfect 21-21 on serve receive. Trubey was next on the team with six digs.

The Nittany Lions will host Manhattan Saturday at 3 p.m.
