Cogan, Harpster key for Altoona

At this point of Brionna Hudson’s career at Altoona, the sophomore isn’t much of a secret any longer. On most nights, she has the ability to put up a pile of points like she did again Friday night against Harrisburg.
And although Hudson’s 25 points were huge, it was the supporting cast that made a big difference. Kendall Cogan poured in 13 points and Samantha Harpster hit three from beyond the arc for nine points to help the Lady Lions to a 66-53 win over the Lady Cougars at the Altoona Fieldhouse.
“(Depth) is extremely important, especially at the 6A level,” Altoona coach Chris Fleegle said. “You need 5-7 kids that can play at this level if you’re going to make a playoff run. When these guys continue to get better, they can step up when Ray is face-guarded or Zae or Brionna is being doubled. You still need those five or six players to come in and contribute.”
Harrisburg (4-8) is in the middle of a turnaround after going 1-21 just a year ago, and the Lady Cougars made Altoona work for everything.
“They played really hard,” Chris Fleegle said. “They made everything difficult. Credit to the new coaching staff they have there. Just in a short year’s time, (Harrisburg coach Ahmya Woodyard) has done a really good job in starting to turn that program around.”
“They’re definitely tougher compared to last year,” Cogan said. “They really brought it to us this year.”
Harrisburg held a 9-5 lead in the first 2:30 of the game before Altoona picked it up with an 11-4 run to finish the period. Cogan was a catalyst in it with five points, while Harpster hit two of her three treys in the opening period to take a 20-13 lead to the second quarter.
“My shooting has been more on point than it has been,” Harpster said.
Cogan was dominant again in the second quarter as she finished up the first half with 11 of her 13 points as Altoona took a 39-26 lead to halftime.
“I just tried to step it up, especially when I didn’t do so well the past couple games,” Cogan said. “I would say I was just trying to prove myself. I had a lot of help from my teammates.”
“She’s a huge key,” Fleegle said. “And she can do that. We talk about it as a team that it doesn’t matter who scores as long as we score. It can be a different kid on any given night. Kendall was running the floor hard, and the kids found her, and she was finishing around the basket.”
Harrisburg kept the game close at 53-41 after three quarters thanks to three treys in the quarter — two from Kayleigh Sweighart and another from Ihyanna Griffin.
Hudson scored 11 of her 25 points in the final period to put the game away.
The Lady Lions, which improved to 10-3 on the season, host State College on Tuesday.
