50 years ago — Dec. 20, 1975: Altoona Area fell to Harrisburg, 71-53, in high school boys basketball action at the Fieldhouse with Doug Pendleton, a frequent team high scorer, totaling 15 points. In other games, Bishop Guilfoyle downed Elk County Christian at the BG gym, 57-36, with its frequent high scorer, Mario Sanchez, totaling 14 points. The BG Jayvees (10-0) also won, 54-40, with Jim DeStefano and Bill Karnes each scoring 10.

25 years ago — Dec. 20, 2000: Tyrone Area High School football standouts Jesse Jones, Doug Roseberry and Scott Gummo were given first-team Associated Press Pennsylvania Small School All-State status. Chris Miller of Bellwood-Antis also made the first team.

10 years ago — Dec. 20, 2015: Previously undefeated Hollidaysburg Area fell to Stafford, Va., 62-59, in the Golden Tiger Roundball Classic championship game in Hollidaysburg. Jake Holsopple scored 18 for the Tigers and was named all-tourney.

50 years ago — Dec. 21, 1975: The Altoona Area High wrestling team remained unbeaten at 4-0 taking down Greater Johnstown, 48-37, with Paul Harris and Terry Fike scoring pins for the Mountain Lions. The Altoona Jayvees also won, 59-6, unbeaten in 18 matches in a row over two years and were coached by John Iorio.

25 years ago — Dec. 21, 2000: The Bishop Guilfoyle girls team knocked off Bedford, 45-30, in the opening round of the Lady Marauder Classic basketball game at the Pleasant Valley Gym, Kori Sisto leading the scoring with 26. In other play, the Altoona Area High girls smothered St. Marys, 80-19, at the Fieldhouse, Lindsey Barr scoring 15 for Altoona.

10 years ago — Dec. 21, 2015: Hollidaysburg native Wayne Campbell of Chambersburg, 36, a graduate of Hollidaysburg High and Penn State, won a prize of $25,000 and a new boat in the Big Bass World Championships near Tulsa, Okla.

1921 — Baseball Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis casts the deciding vote to return to best-of-seven World Series from the best-of-nine format. The American League votes to return to best-of-seven World Series, while National League votes for the best-of-nine format. The a best-of-nine series was used in 1903 and 1919 through 1921

1891 — Dr. James Naismith introduces the first game of basketball. Based on 13 rules created by Naismith, the game is tested by 18 students at the School for Christian Workers in Springfield, Massachusetts. Using a soccer ball, two peach baskets and two teams of nine players each, the objective is to throw a round ball into a round basket attached to a balcony 10 feet above the floor.

1941 — The Chicago Bears win the NFL championship with a 37-9 rout of the New York Giants.
