Seven Altoona wrestlers advance to quarterfinals of King of the Mountain tournament

MILL HALL — The Altoona wrestling team had a pretty good first day on Friday in the King of the Mountain at Central Mountain High School, advancing seven wrestlers into this morning’s quarterfinals and tying for third in the 32-team standings.

The Mountain Lions will have Dominic Picciotti (107), Dominic Nardozza (114), Deklan Barr (127), Braiden Weaver (133), Phillip Sarbo (152), Gavin Ciampoli (160) and Mike Colyer (215) wrestling in the 10 a.m. quarterfinals.

Altoona’s seven quarterfinalists were only matched by seventh-place Wilson West Lawn.

The Mountain Lions are tied with Greater Latrobe for third with 68 points. Boyertown is in first place with 76.5 points and four in the quarterfinals. Central Mountain is in second place with 70 points and four in the quarterfinals.

Chestnut Ridge is in sixth place with 66 points and six in the quarterfinals.

An intriguing possible finals matchup is looking at 133 between Weaver and Ridge’s returning state champion Dominic Deputy. They didn’t wrestle each other in the dual meet. Two-time tournament champ and three-time finalist Deputy beat Weaver in the finals two years ago.

Ridge’s other quarterfinalists are Kooper Deputy (107), Garrett Weyandt (121), Austin Bernash (127), Trenden Willey (139) and Jayden Imler (189).

The semifinals are scheduled for 1:15 p.m., while the championship finals and consolation finals are set for 4:15.

PC Panther Classic

CRESSON — Two wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to today’s semifinals on the first day of the 56-team Panther Holliday Classic on Friday at Mount Aloysius College.

Tyrone’s returning Panther Holiday Classic champion Kyle Scott (189) advanced to the semifinals, which are set for 11:45 a.m., as did Glendale’s Daniel Williams (285).

In his first major tournament back from missing last season with a knee injury, Williams recorded three falls, including a pin of Troy’s Reed Palmer in 2:25 in the quarterfinals. The third-seeded Williams is set to face Selinsgrove’s second-seeded Jack Peters in the semifinals.
