Penn State beats Clemson, 22-10, in Pinstripe Bowl

NEW YORK — It was a frigid day for the Pinstripe Bowl, the second one that Penn State has participated in, with a game-time temperature of 28 degrees.

It was also a particularly sloppy day for both PSU and Clemson on the offensive end. Some of that has to do with plenty of opt-outs on both sides.

In the end, the Nittany Lions did enough on the offensive end with quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer throwing touchdown passes to Trebor Pena and Andrew Rappleyea in the fourth quarter in a 22-10 victory over the Tigers.

Announced attendance for the game in Yankee Stadium was 41,101, which was the highest Pinstripe Bowl attendance since 2014 when Penn State beat Boston College in overtime.

It was especially interesting because Penn State and Clemson had the Nos. 1 and 2 QBs in the Class of 2022. Drew Allar was No. 1, while Clemson starter Cade Klubnik was No. 2 in the same class. Klubnik finished with 22 for 39 passing with 193 yards.

Dani Dennis-Sutton was especially impressive, considering many players that are a possible late Day 1 or Day 2 pick in the NFL Draft are sitting out of bowl games. Dennis-Sutton wrapped up his PSU career with four tackles, two for a loss, and two sacks.

Grunkemeyer, who like many has an uncertain future coming later this week, finished the day 23 for 34 with 262 yards and the two touchdowns.

Multiple chants of ‘Ter-ry!’ rang down on Yankee Stadium near the end of the game in a tribute to interim coach Terry Smith in his final game as the head coach. Smith is staying on staff under Matt Campbell.
