With the program’s all-time leading scorer on its mind, the Altoona Area High School boys basketball team earned its first win of the season with a 62-60 overtime victory over Carlisle on Tuesday night at the AAHS Fieldhouse.
A moment of silence was held for former Mountain Lion Steve Taneyhill, who passed away Sunday from cancer at the age of 52. Taneyhill had been a teammate of current Altoona coach Doug Pfeffer and is the program’s career scoring leader with 1,624 points.
Taneyhill went on to star as a quarterback for the University of South Carolina football team in the 1990s.
“I talked the last two days about being a part of the Mountain Lions and taking pride in their effort,” Pfeffer said. “I told them about Steve and how important he was to Altoona High School, and we dedicated our effort tonight to Steve’s memory.”
Altoona trailed at halftime, 28-24, and was down, 44-36, heading to the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Lions surged from behind to tie the game, 55-55, at the end of regulation.

Altoona took the overtime period, 7-5.
“I am really proud of our guys tonight,” Pfeffer said. “We could have folded, but they dug down and worked their butts off. I am so happy for these young men, who deserved this win.”
Junior Elliott McCloskey led the Mountain Lions (1-5) with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Justin Pfeffer scored 14, Chris Wagner scored 12, and Ethan Hicks contributed five assists.
