Lady Marauders weekend trip provides two wins

H.S. girls hoops

WEXFORD — The Bishop Guilfoyle Academy girls basketball team went to the Pittsburgh area over the weekend and came away with two victories — 51-26 over Class 2A power Neshannock on Saturday and 51-37 over Class 5A school Thomas Jefferson on Sunday.

Morgan Ruggery, who was the Altoona Mirror Player of the Year as a sophomore, led the Lady Marauders with 15 points against TJ and had 14 points against Neshannock.

Stella Yeskey led BG with 16 points against Neshannock, and Hannah Homan had three 3-pointers and scored 13 points against Thomas Jefferson.

Lady Pirates-CH win

WILLIAMSBURG — Levada Gorsuch had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Faith Detwiler finished with 19 points and 10 steals to lead Williamsburg to an 83-24 win over Tussey Mountain in the first round of the Williamsburg Christmas Tournament in high school girls basketball on Saturday.

Bella Royer, playing in her first varsity game after returning from an injury, scored 14 points and made three 3-pointers.

In the other first round game, Cambria Heights dominated Glendale, 52-13, behind 20 points from Markie Bender and 12 points by Kinley Rogal.

The Lady Vikings got seven points from Gabriella Leiden.

Valley goes 1-1

HUNTINGDON — Juniata Valley bounced back from losing in the first round of the Huntingdon Lions Tournament on Saturday at the Kennedy Sports Center, 63-53, to Southern Huntingdon on Saturday by winning, 58-12, over Mount Union on Sunday in the consolation game in high school girls basketball.

Aubrey Anderson, who made the all-tournament team, scored 17 points against Mount Union and nine against Southern Huntingdon. Anna Taylor scored 13 against the Lady Trojans and 12 points against Southern. Mazzy Hartman, who also made the all-tourney team, added 12 points against the Rockets and 14 points against Mount Union.
