Jeff Kent elected into Major League Baseball Hall of Fame

ORLANDO, Fla. — Jeff Kent was been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame by the contemporary era committee on Sunday, while steroids-tainted stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were among seven players who fell short once again.

Kent appeared on 14 of 16 ballots, two more than the 12 ballots needed for the 75% minimum. Carlos Delgado received nine votes, followed by Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy with six each.

Inter Miami wins MLS Cup

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have won their first MLS Cup, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday.

Messi set up the winning goal with a 72nd-minute assist. The victory marked Inter Miami as the 16th franchise to win an MLS title in the league’s 30-year history.

Matsuyama rallies to win

NASSAU, Bahamas — Hideki Matsuyama holed out from the 10th fairway for eagle on his way to an 8-under 64 and stuffed his 9-iron to 2 feet on the 18th hole in a playoff to defeat Alex Noren and win the Hero World Challenge for the second time.

Elsewhere in golf:

n Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen won the Australian Open and earned a spot in the Masters when he scrambled for par on the final hole for a 1-under 70.
