If healthy, Jackson will play for Ravens

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh says he’ll have a better sense Wednesday about quarterback Lamar Jackson’s status for Sunday night’s game at Pittsburgh that will decide the AFC North title.

Tyler Huntley helped Baltimore keeps its playoff hopes alive, replacing an injured Jackson for last weekend’s win at Green Bay. But Harbaugh said Monday if Jackson is ready, he’ll play Sunday. Jackson has been nursing a back injury from two weekends ago against New England.

The Green Bay game was the fourth game he’s missed this season.

If Jackson is able to play, this will be a chance for him to move past a rocky stretch. He hurt his hamstring in Week 4, and by the time he came back Baltimore was 2-5. The Ravens won their first four games after his return, but he dealt with other health issues and still hasn’t had a full week of practice since early November.

A break for Allen

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Bills quarterback Josh Allen can use a rest. He’s expected to get one Sunday in what’s essentially a meaningless regular-season finale against the Jets. Aside from taking the opening snap to extend his streak of consecutive regular-season starts to 122, the longest active run among NFL quarterbacks, Allen is expected to watch the game from the sideline. The time off would provide Allen’s sore right foot time to heal before Buffalo opens the playoffs on the road in the wild-card round in two weeks. He also could use a mental break during a season in which he’s been relied upon to carry the offensive load too often.

Still wants to coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid says he plans to return next season, dismissing any retirement rumors. On Monday, he joked about his status with the franchise he’s led to three Super Bowl titles. Reid, 67, is used to fielding questions about his future after the Super Bowl, but this season, Kansas City is 6-10 and out of playoff contention. Reid signed a five-year extension in April 2024. He spent 14 seasons with the Eagles before joining the Chiefs, where he’s had great success with quarterbacks Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. Reid has 307 wins, needing 18 more to pass George Halas for third on the NFL’s all-time list.

No Giants

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame has restructured coach Marcus Freeman’s contract and he will coach the Fighting Irish next season, the school confirmed on Monday.

SI.com first reported Freeman’s new contract and that he notified two NFL teams that had contacted him about jobs that he would stay at Notre Dame.

Freeman, who had been widely mentioned as a potential candidate for the vacant New York Giants job, signaled his return to Notre Dame with a social media post. On his personal X account, he wrote, “2026… run it back”

Freeman’s contract was extended one year, through 2031, according to SI.com. Financial terms were not available.

Freeman, 39, is 43-12 in four-plus seasons as head coach, including 34-7 the past three years. Notre Dame won 10 straight games following an 0-2 start and opted to not play in a bowl when it was passed over for a spot in the College Football Playoff. In 2024, the Irish set a school record for wins by going 14-2 and reaching the national championship game.

Brian Kelly hired Freeman as his defensive coordinator in 2021, and Freeman was named his successor when he left for LSU after that regular season. Freeman previously was defensive coordinator at Cincinnati and linebackers coach at Purdue and Kent State.

Starting at $2.99/week.
