Emeigh hits huge bucket for Golden Eagles in final seconds

H.S. boys basketball

BELLWOOD — Tyrone may have had a lot of starting over to do at the beginning of the high school boys basketball season, but it’s clear that they’re doing a lot of growing up, too.

All four of their games have been decided by seven points or less and on Monday night against Bellwood-Antis, in the final moments of the game, the Golden Eagles were dealing with two of their top overall scorers having fouled out.

But as opportunity knocked earlier in the game for Conner Zupon — who was making his varsity debut — Mason Emeigh got his shot as he put away the dagger.

In a chaotic closing sequence, Mason Emeigh, on a putback, broke the hearts of the Blue Devils as the Golden Eagles gutted out a 50-49 win in Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference action.

“We came together and we finished it,” Mason Emeigh said. “We overcame adversity. We had some people foul out. We ended up with a win.”

Tyrone coach Luke Rhoades was impressed with how his team responded.

“I feel proud of the way we fought and kept fighting through it,” he said. “We got hot early, then we couldn’t put the ball in the basket. You got to give credit to Bellwood’s outstanding defense and the way they played. Our kids kept getting after it. I’m very happy we could make the play at the end.”

After the Blue Devils jumped out to the early lead, the Eagles offense went to work as Eli Woomer knocked down a four-point play, which helped set off a 20-2 run to the end the opening stanza.

Woomer — who led all scorers with 23 points — scored three times from beyond the arc, and Ben Walk added eight of his own to take a 20-7 lead after the opening quarter. Walk finished with 14 points for the Eagles.

That’s when Bellwood started chipping away. After falling behind by 15 points during the second quarter, it got three 3-pointers — one each from Jackson Dorminy, Colin Gibbons and Conner Mayes, respectively — to cut the deficit to 30-24 at the half. Dorminy led the Blue Devils with 15.

“My kids don’t give up,” B-A coach Tyler Mertiff said. “Give credit to Tyrone, neither did they. We let one guy get us early Woomer, he’s a heck of an athlete.

“I give credit to my kids. They could’ve folded early, but we didn’t. We weren’t in situations like this (last year). The situation got bigger than us. My young guys go to learn (how to handle the situation).”

Bellwood then took control in the third as Colin McClellan entered the picture. He buried a pair of threes as part of a 13-2 run in the third quarter. His triple with around four minutes to play in the stanza gave them a 34-32 lead.

The Blue Devil defense also put the clamps down as they held the Golden Eagles without a single field goal in the third. Ashton Emeigh’s two free-throws were their lone points in the frame.

But the Eagles took over for good with under a minute to play as buckets by Zupon and Rudden helped give Tyrone a 48-46 lead.

McClellan answered with a 3-pointer of his own to give Bellwood the lead before the game-winning shot.

“We had our two top seniors, our two top players, they both fouled out of the game,” Rhoades said. “Other guys stepped up and made plays. Conner Zupon’s first varsity action tonight, and he made a big putback to tie the game.”

While Mertiff is disappointed in the result, he is proud of the signs of growth the Blue Devils have shown so far having already topped their two-win count from last season just five games into this season.

“We’re ahead of where I thought we even could be,” he said. “I believe in these guys, and I think they’re starting to believe in themselves. These kids will run through a wall for Bellwood and I love it. We can’t let the game get bigger than us at the end. We preach little things, we let the little things get to us.”
