B-A girls use big 4th quarter to beat rival
H.S. girls hoops
TYRONE — Early in the fourth quarter of the girls basketball edition of the “Backyard Brawl” between Bellwood-Antis and Tyrone, the Lady Eagles picked up a critical 3-pointer which at the time, put them up by 10.
From that point, though, the Lady Blue Devils found a way to break the press, and from there they controlled the pace for the rest of the night.
Bellwood outscored Tyrone from there 19-6 as it hung on for the 50-47 win in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference contest.
“Credit to my assistant coaches, I have a great staff,” Bellwood-Antis coach Kyley Long said. “They saw some changes that we needed to make with our defense and our press, so we made those adjustments. We figured that they were going to want to take the air out of the basketball, and our response to our kids was ‘we’re going to go on runs, we’re not taking the air out of the ball.'”
After playing an even first quarter, the Lady Eagles took control as Brielle Parker drew the and-1 opportunity. Rylan Crowell — draining two — and Lola Woomer each added 3-pointers to help Tyrone take a 26-20 lead into the locker room.
Tyrone added on in the third as Crowell added another three, and Claire Lehman added a couple of buckets to give the Lady Eagles ,a 38-31 lead after three.
Woomer led Tyrone with 14 points while Crowell added 12.
But once the Lady Devils went down 10, the Lady Eagles were dealing with foul trouble — one fouling out — and that opened the door for Bellwood to break down the Tyrone press.
At the midway point of the third, Lilly Gerwert drew the bonus to cut the deficit to two before a Marissa Cacciotti converted a layup off a turnover to tie the game at 41.
“I probably missed a timeout to attempt to kill momentum,” Tyrone coach Mike Whitling said. “We had a little bit of foul trouble. We’re running with five kids out there, and while they gave a lot of effort, I think we did get tired there and we got into a lull. It’s the job of the coach to get that momentum cut down a little bit. I take full responsibility for that one.”
Improving against the press was a point of emphasis this season for Bellwood-Antis.
“We’ve seen that that was going to be our weakness over the last year or two, so we’ve worked extremely hard in the offseason and the beginning of this season on it,” Longo said. “We’re not afraid of those things. I think we attacked it well as a team. We had different people willing to step up and handle the ball. Our kids were strong with the basketball and were able to finish at the line when we needed to.”
Gerwert led all scorers with 15 points.
But the key play during that run came from Isabella Sloey as she buried a 3-pointer to help Bellwood take a 46-41 lead as she scored 10 points.
“That has to probably be one of not only one of the best offensive games I’ve seen her play, but one of the toughest games I’ve seen her play,” Longo said. “Lola Woomer is probably one of the best players in this area. We know that her and Izzy are very good friends, and we put Izzy on her and I thought Izzy really stepped up to the challenge with her.”
“She stepped up when we needed her to. I thought she rebounded the ball well, I thought she got the 50-50 basketballs well. Overall, that’s the best I’ve seen her play.”
