CLEVELAND — Rookie Dillon Gabriel will get his first NFL start on Sunday when the Cleveland Browns face the Minnesota Vikings in London.
The Browns are benching Joe Flacco after he struggled to lead the offense in the first four games. Cleveland is 1-3 and ranked next-to-last in scoring, averaging 14 points per game.
The team has scored 17 points or fewer in nine straight games. Gabriel will be the fifth different starting QB in 10 games. Gabriel was selected in the third round of April’s draft.
He has seen action in two games and has completed three of four passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Lamar hurting
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Lamar Jackson was not at practice for the Baltimore Ravens.
The two-time MVP left last weekend’s loss at Kansas City with a hamstring injury, and by the end of that game, all four of Baltimore’s first-team All-Pros from last season were injured.
The Ravens host Houston on Sunday. Baltimore does have experienced backup quarterbacks in Cooper Rush, who started eight games for Dallas last season, and Tyler Huntley.
Also missing from practice Wednesday were: fullback Patrick Ricard, tackle Ronnie Stanley, linebacker Roquan Smith and cornerbacks Nate Wiggins, Chidobe Awuzie and Marlon Humphrey.
Daniels cleared
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been medically cleared by team doctors and has participated in practice after missing two games with an injured left knee.
Another bit of good news for the injury-hit Commanders also arrived on Wednesday: Starting right guard Sam Cosmi began his 21-day practice window after beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Cosmi tore the ACL in his knee during the playoffs last season, when Daniels led the club to the NFC title game. Daniels got hurt in the fourth quarter of Washington’s 27-18 loss at the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 11.
Purdy out
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss his third game of the season because of a toe injury.
Purdy missed games in Week 2 and 3 before returning against Jacksonville. He will be unable to play tonight against the Los Angeles Rams.
Mac Jones will start in Purdy’s place. Jones won both starts in Purdy’s absence earlier this season.
Purdy now will have missed five of San Francisco’s last 12 games with injuries dating to last season.
Liking the Rams
Because Purdy and starting receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are out for the banged-up 49ers, along with tight end George Kittle, things look bad for the 49ers.
The Rams are a blocked field goal away from being undefeated. The 49ers are 14-10-1 ATS on short rest under coach Kyle Shanahan, but 2-3 ATS vs. Rams in those situations.
Sean McVay is 17-7 ATS coaching on short rest. The Rams have won three straight in the series. AP pick: Rams, 26-16
