SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been detained by police and admitted to a mental health clinic in the Dominican Republic.

Authorities said on Tuesday his family requested the move, and it is not linked to any legal issues. Earlier this year, Franco was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended sentence. Last weekend, he reported $16,000 stolen from a resort, but his attorney later claimed the money was found.

Franco disagreed, insisting it had been stolen. His future in Major League Baseball remains uncertain, although he says he is still training.

Bichette on injured list

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays put shortstop Bo Bichette on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained left knee, retroactive to Sept. 7 on Tuesday.

Toronto recalled outfielder Joey Loperfido from Triple-A Buffalo. Bichette leads the majors with 181 hits and 44 doubles, and ranks third with a .311 average. The two-time All-Star and two-time AL hit leader has 18 homers and leads Toronto with 93 RBIs in 139 games.

Bichette was injured in the sixth inning of a loss to the Yankees when he collided with catcher Austin Wells and was tagged out at home plate.
