Jets acquire two defensive linemen

NFL notebook

McGary

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have agreed to terms on a trade for veteran nose tackle Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday night to bolster their defensive line, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The Jets are sending sixth-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027 to the Vikings, who are trading a 2027 seventh-rounder along with Philips — pending the 29-year-old D-lineman’s physical — according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams didn’t announce the deal.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Jets traded for defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns that also involves draft picks.

The Browns sent a seventh-round pick in next year’s NFL draft to New York on Wednesday for a sixth-rounder. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season. He adds depth to a defensive line led by Quinnen Williams.

The 29-year-old Phillips played the past three seasons for the Vikings after spending his first four with Buffalo. He was a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2018. Phillips has eight career sacks, five fumble recoveries and is regarded as a top run stuffer.

Big bucks for backup

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears signed backup quarterback Tyson Bagent to a two-year contract extension through the 2027 season.

Bagent’s made a big impression over two seasons. Undrafted in 2023 following a record-setting career at Division II powerhouse Shepherd University in West Virginia, Bagent played in five games that year and made four starts while leading Chicago to two wins with Justin Fields injured.

He completed 66% of his passes for 859 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions.

Wounded Falcon

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons right tackle Kaleb McGary was carted off the practice field with a possible lower left leg injury on Wednesday, giving the team a new challenge as it prepares for Friday night’s final preseason game at Dallas.

The Falcons said an update on McGary, a 2019 first-round pick who has started 92 of 93 games, would be provided “at the appropriate time” following an MRI.

If the Falcons are without McGary, they will have to find a new blocker to protect the blind side of left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the 2024 first-round pick who is entering his first full season as the starter.

McGary recently signed a contract extension through the 2027 season.

The Falcons’ latest depth chart listed six-year veteran Brandon Parker and rookie Jack Nelson as McGary’s top backups. Veteran Elijah Wilkinson, who has played both tackle and guard in his eight-year career, moved in to replace McGary in Wednesday’s practice.

Sneed has a plan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee cornerback L’Jarius Sneed says the plan is for him to be ready for the Titans’ season opener Sept. 7 at Denver and he’s very confident that will happen.

Sneed passed his physical and was removed from the physically unable to perform list in time for practice Wednesday. The two-time Super Bowl champion was part of the Titans’ big offseason spending spree in March 2024.

He played five games before a quadriceps injury put him on injured reserve. Sneed said during an offseason camp that he was as healthy as he’s been.

He started training camp on the PUP list with team officials saying Sneed had a knee cleaned up in May.

Starting at $2.99/week.
