Dallas’ star defender lost to Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks found another pass catcher for new quarterback Sam Darnold and bolstered their pass rush on the first official day of the new league year.

Seattle agreed Wednesday to a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million with speedster Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to agent Harold Lewis. The Seahawks later reached a three-year, $42 million deal with $18 million guaranteed with former Dallas edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it hadn’t been announced.

Lawrence, who turns 33 next month, spent his first 11 seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys, making four Pro Bowls and getting 61 1/2 sacks during his tenure.

Lawrence played only four games last season before being sidelined with a foot injury but had three sacks and five quarterback hits in his brief action.

Jets cut LB loose

The New York Jets have released veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley after six seasons.

The move Wednesday has the Jets parting with one of the team’s popular captains in a salary cap move. The 32-year-old Mosley played in just four games last season because of a toe injury and later a herniated disk in his neck. He restructured his contract last offseason and was due to make $4.25 million guaranteed this season and count $12.8 million on the salary cap.

He signed with the Jets in 2019 after five standout seasons in Baltimore and was the heartbeat of New York’s defense during his tenure.

Dillon returns

Running back AJ Dillon and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Dillon sat out last season because of a neck injury. He ran for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first four seasons with Green Bay. Dillon provides a backup behind Saquon Barkley, the 2024 AP Offensive Player of the Year who set an NFL record for most yards rushing in a regular season and playoffs combined with 2,504.

Broncos sign TE

Tight end Evan Engram and the Denver Broncos have agreed on a two-year, $23 million contract. Engram’s deal includes $16.5 million guaranteed.

He is a two-time Pro Bowl pick who had 47 catches for 365 yards and one touchdown last season in Jacksonville. He caught 114 passes in 2023.

A first-round pick by the Giants in 2017, Engram has 496 receptions for 4,922 yards and 25 TDs in eight seasons.

Starting at $2.99/week.
