Irwin has earned 'God's trophy'

I was fortunate to attend the Bishop Guilfoyle and Tyrone football game last Friday night.

At halftime, they honored the greatest person I know -- Tom Irwin.

I have been fortunate to know Tom and his wonderful wife, Lenora, and family for over 50 years.

I have coached with Tom and volunteered with him on projects at the Ecumenical Council and Evergreen Manors' Gloria Gates Foundation.

I have learned so much from him by how he interacts with everyone, regardless of their age or circumstances.

Tom will never know how much he has meant to me and all who have known him.

He has been my mentor, hero and most of all my friend.

He is God's trophy, and in life, he hasn't just succeeded, he has triumphed.

I think Cory Giger's point about the running backs in last week's Penn State point-counterpoint could have some deeper ramifications for Penn State.

The transfer portal might look good to Nick Singleton or Kaytron Allen if they don't get the opportunity to rack up big numbers this year.

You can be sure there are teams out there who might be pointing this out to one or both of them as the season wears on.

It happened here in Houston this offseason with running back Alton McCaskill, who was one of the top running backs in country a couple years ago.

A local product, he stayed at home to play with the Houston Cougars. He started as a freshman and then suffered a knee injury with a few games to play.

While rehabbing, Colorado came calling, and in a wink he was gone.
