Jimmy Ronan passed away last week, and our local baseball community lost a legend.
I was fortunate to be able to grow up watching Ro play as he was a teammate of my dad's, and his sons Brent and Scooter and I never missed a game or tournament.
Later in life, I was able to be his teammate as well as having him as a coach.
I was blessed to have many influential people in my life, and Ro is at the top of that list.
He was a massive presence on the field and could hit a ball further than anyone I have ever seen, but the way he played the game and his sportsmanship always stuck out to me.
He played the game hard and the right way, and his teammates followed suit.
Jim was so well respected by his opponents and was in a who's who among former City League greats, many of whom attended his viewing.
I never once saw Ro question an umpire's call, and he always had a smile on his face when on the baseball diamond -- a smile we will all never forget.
He was a gentleman on and off the field and someone everyone always enjoyed being around. He had time for everybody, no matter who you were.
I thank Big Ro for all he has done for me and so many others. I know there is a nice weight room in heaven and a 35-inch Black Magic for him to get some swings.

'Success measured in many ways'
I was privileged to have played over 20 of my 40 consecutive years in the Greater City Baseball League with or against Jim Ronan.
Success can be measured in many ways -- certainly wins and championships. These tangible benchmarks are documented.
But those many hours on the ballfield as teammates, including practices, offered so much more.
The opportunity to watch our kids grow up and families interact was a bonus. After most games -- win or lose -- teammates and families would share a meal and rehash the game.
These times created a bond beyond the game.
But as impressive as Jim was on the field, the past year and his courageous battle with cancer was so much more.
I had several conversations with him over this time, and after each call, I came away with a greater appreciation of the strength and courage of this man. His positive attitude and inner strength were truly inspiring.
Jim will be greatly missed by his wife, family and many friends. We all hope for "extra innings," but a life well lived guarantees the ultimate win.
Memory is eternal.
