Giger's story takes Altoona back in time
I have never written about anything, but I wanted to commend Cory Giger for the great article in Thursday's Mirror on the Mountain City's professional baseball team in the late 1880s.
I am 71 and have lived in Blair County all my life but never heard of them.
I love to hear about and celebrate people that helped shape our area.
I encourage more of these segments.

Shorter spring training showing its effects
I watched the Los Angeles Dodgers lose their eight-game winning streak to the Atlanta Braves, 3-1, the other night.
The game is a good example of what has happened in Major League Baseball to starting pitchers not completing near-perfect games and taken out early, but in other cases when the best starting pitchers get roughed up for not getting enough spring training time.
Last week against the Minnesota Twins, the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw was taken out of the game after seven innings -- despite pitching a perfect game to that point.
Also, the shortened spring training took the opposite direction and showed up with the Dodgers being two-hit over nine innings due to the masterful pitching by Max Fries.
In another issue, MLB games are not getting shorter in time. The time clock in the minor leagues is still a good idea, but other measures need to be taken to ensure the time clock rule is not being violated.
There is a lot of confusion.
