Talking ourselves into failure

There are a couple of stories that seem unrelated but are very related. They show the story of a country that used to build things and has decided, without ever admitting it, that building is too hard. Start with the missiles. Rep. Mike Turner was on television last week talking about letting Ukraine license our Patriot technology and build the missiles themselves, because the threat is spreading and our defenses must spread with it. He is right. Think how strange that is. The most powerful country in history is handing another nation the recipe for our best defensive weapon because we ...

The Constitution belongs to all of us

Most Americans don’t wake up thinking about constitutional law or the separation of powers. They worry about paying the mortgage, buying groceries, affording health care and putting gas in the car. They voted hoping life would become more affordable and secure. Instead, many are facing rising costs, growing uncertainty and a government increasingly focused on consolidating power rather than solving everyday problems. Throughout history, democracy has rarely disappeared overnight. It erodes when leaders weaken independent institutions, demand personal loyalty over constitutional duty, ...

Support for rape crisis centers can create change

Rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania will see state funding double under the budget signed last month. These agencies provide services to victims of sexual assault. Pittsburgh Action Against Rape was one of the first in the state and one of the first in the country. It has been a refuge and a helping hand for victims for more than 50 years. It is one of 47 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania. In 2025, the state budgeted $12 million for them. That can sound like a lot of money until you cut it into 47 pieces and expect it to stretch like a too-small blanket to cover women, men and ...

Readiness program calms kids’ anxiety

This is an editorial focusing primarily on the Altoona Area School District. However, the message within it should be of interest to every district in the six-county Southern Alleghenies region, as well as beyond. The message is one too late to be implemented for the 2026-27 school year, but it’s not too late — or early — to be contemplated for the 2027-28 school year, or beyond. For many young children, this is a month for anxiety about the new experience that only is weeks or days away — the experience of starting kindergarten or first grade. However, many Altoona School ...

Making my bed isn’t about productivity

While visiting my mom, my son asked, “Why do I have to make my bed at Grandma’s house?” I smoothed the quilt over the mattress and answered without thinking, “Because Grandma likes it neat and she deserves a nice space.” My response surprised me. What did being tidy have to do with worth? I somehow managed to frame household chores as a matter of being deserving. Self-worth is a lifelong lesson for me. Like many of us, it’s something I’ve worked on through therapy and journaling. I confront my demons, and I like to think I’m slaying them one by one. I thought my ...

Four-letter words no substitute for thought

Swearing was once rare, reserved to convey the utmost shock, pain or rage, or the deepest disappointment, disgust or disbelief. The audiences at “Gone with the Wind” in 1939 were scandalized and titillated when Scarlett O’Hara asked Rhett Butler what would become of her if he left, and Rhett, played by Clark Gable, replied, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” At the signing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, Vice President Joe Biden told President Barack Obama, “This is a big f---ing deal.” The then-veep at least had the discretion to whisper the obscenity, but ...
