The recent federal crackdowns on senior daycare fraud expose a deep-seated ongoing problem: Taxpayer dollars are being drained by systemic abuse, while regular families face skyrocketing health insurance costs. Some people may see the stern measure as a political movement.
Corruption from frontline facilities overcharging the government mirrors the corporate exploitation from health insurance conglomerates overcharging patients. While a senior center might inflate attendance logs and bill for unjustified treatments to siphon public funds, insurance companies gouge the public with unaffordable premiums to fund questionable huge CEO payouts. At the same time, these massive "nonprofit" insurers abuse the system by squeezing independent retail pharmacies with inadequate medication reimbursements resulting in loss of revenue and pharmacy closures in our area. This trend is out of step with community expectations.
Whether abuse happens via frontline fraud or possible corporate greed, the result is identical: regular people lose access to vital care because of increased cost. We need aggressive, structural bipartisan accountability that treats both local fraud and corporate overcharging as equivalent abuses of the public trust. It must transcend politics and never be used to fuel a political agenda.
