Gov’t, healthcare demand transparency

2 min read

As someone living with an autoimmune disease on a fixed income, I know how important access to medicines and reliable care can be. When you're managing a chronic condition and a budget at the same time, healthcare costs aren't just a policy issue. They are personal.

The 340B Drug Pricing Program gives eligible hospitals and clinics discounts on medicines, so they can ensure low-income and rural patients have access to affordable medicines. Its mission matters to patients across Pennsylvania, including me. Accountability for how the program operates matters too.

I may not follow every technical detail of healthcare policy, but I do understand the importance of accountability. If providers can show how discounted medicines are being used, that seems like a reasonable step toward making sure the program is serving the patients it was created to help.

The details can sound technical and I don't expect that the pilot will solve every healthcare affordability problem. But, what matters to me is that we are taking steps towards the program serving patients the way it was intended to.

For someone managing an ongoing illness, access to treatment is personal. I support efforts to make 340B more transparent and accountable while keeping patients at the center. We need a program that is sustainable and focused on the people it was created to help.
