Preventable diseases such as measles have been making recent headlines across Pennsylvania, once again putting the efficacy of vaccines back in the national spotlight.
Vaccines have a strong safety record and remain a trusted public health tool recognized by leading health organizations. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are recommended by public health authorities to help prevent measles and provide long-lasting protection for most people. Vaccines have been associated with significant reductions in serious illness and death from infectious disease. They also help prevent strain and increased costs on the healthcare system.
However, it's not just about vaccinating against measles. As cold and flu season approaches, flu and pneumonia vaccinations also help prep your immune system to fight illness. From your provider's office to your neighborhood pharmacy or community health center, vaccines are widely available across the Commonwealth. Many vaccines are covered by your insurance, although coverage and out-of-pocket costs may vary by plan.
Vaccines have and will remain a personal choice. Please have the conversation with your trusted healthcare provider and make an informed decision for yourself and your family. Sometimes vaccines aren't just protecting you, they are also helping to protect others in our community who can't be vaccinated due to age or other conditions.
Together, we can help save lives from preventable diseases.
