Remember PSU for its positives

I am writing this regarding the recent developments at Pennsylvania State University (main campus) and the alleged drug ring operations which have tied two fraternities and their members to a large cocaine distribution network. Although I find this appalling and proper measures should be taken to discipline all of those involved, I feel that this can tarnish an otherwise excellent university with a solid academic reputation.

Let's look at some of the positives involving Penn State, which has achieved significant milestones across academics, research, student philanthropy and athletics.

First, Penn State awarded its one-millionth degree in August.

Secondly, the university generates over $11.6 billion annually for the state economy and supports local entrepreneurship through the Invent Penn State initiative.

Third, the Alumni Network is home to the world's largest dues-paying alumni association, boasting over 172,000 members.

Fourth, THON: Students run the world's largest student-run philanthropy that has raised tens of millions of dollars for the Four Diamonds fund to fight childhood cancer (including a record $17.7 million in a single recent fiscal year).

These are just some of the many accomplishments Penn State is noted for today.

Let's please look at the positives that reflect this university full of opportunities for our students, and not the negatives. A few "bad apples" don't reflect an entire institution. I am not trying to sweep these recent drug developments under the rug. I am saying that people only seem to remember the negatives about a situation. That is unfortunate.
