As a longtime resident of a community that mostly supports President Trump, I write to address his recent decision to revoke White House access for select media organizations. While many in our area understand the deep frustration with certain press coverage -- which often feels biased or disconnected from "normal” American life -- we must be careful not to cheer away fundamental principles that serve us all.
Holding press credentials is a standard mechanism for public accountability, not a personal favor. Throughout history, the press has served as a crucial buffer between everyday citizens and government power, regardless of which party holds the Oval Office. When any administration decides which journalists are permitted to ask questions based on whether their coverage is considered favorable, it sets a dangerous precedent.
If a future administration uses these exact same tactics against conservative outlets, our community would rightly be outraged.
Standardized press access ensures that politicians across the political spectrum are held accountable to the public they serve. Supporting constitutional protections means upholding them even when they apply to institutions we dislike or disagree with.
