Our representative seems to have no shortage of time for ribbon cuttings, ceremonial events, and photo opportunities. Those public appearances make for nice pictures, but they are no substitute for an open town hall where constituents can ask unscripted questions and receive honest answers.
A town hall is one of the most basic responsibilities of an elected official. It gives people of all political views an opportunity to raise concerns, seek clarification on important issues, and hold their representative accountable. Carefully staged events with invited guests simply don't provide that opportunity.
Whether people agree or disagree with their representatives' positions, they deserve a chance to be heard in an open public forum. If our congressman is willing to stand before the voters he represents and answer their questions.
Public service requires more than publicity. It requires accountability.
