I felt compelled to respond to the Letter to the Editor published on Tuesday, July 21, titled "Are lawmakers really ignoring constituents?" I am proud of the fact that I devoted more than 20 years of my adult life defending and protecting everybody's rights to do and to be whatever they wish, no matter how right, wrong or impassioned I might feel about their particular beliefs and causes. However, I think it is an embarrassment to publicly misquote the Declaration of Independence while also supporting ridiculous, insane movements such as "No Kings" protests.
I suggest everyone take time to actually read the Declaration of Independence to understand its significance and to know that it does not start with the words "We the People."
I will not teach anyone where the phrase comes from. That was the responsibility of their 9th grade social studies teachers. However, if people continue to embarrass themselves by misquoting the Declaration of Independence, then maybe our lawmakers, and We the People as well, are better served by ignoring them.
